How to Use a Divination Pendulum

A pendulum works by amplifying subtle physical movement your body makes unconsciously, giving a clear yes/no answer to a question you're holding. Hold the chain still, ask your question, and watch which direction it swings — that's your answer.

Most people expect a pendulum to move on its own, like something outside them is doing the work. It isn't. It's your own hand, your own nervous system, responding to something you already know but haven't said out loud yet. The pendulum just gives that knowing somewhere to go.

What you'll need

A pendulum — a small weighted point on a chain, often with a crystal at the end. Sodalite for clarity, rose quartz for matters of the heart, clear quartz if you want something that works for anything, or any crystal you feel drawn to. A quiet space. A few minutes where nobody needs you.

How to set your pendulum

Before you start, you need to know what a "yes" and "no" look like for your body specifically — it's different for everyone.

Hold the chain loosely between your thumb and forefinger, elbow resting on a table if that's more comfortable. Let it hang still. Ask out loud: "Show me yes." Wait. It'll start to swing — forward and back, side to side, or in a circle. Whatever it does, that's your yes.

Let it settle, then ask: "Show me no." Note the difference.

This only takes a minute, and you only need to do it once — your yes and no tend to stay consistent.

How to ask a question

Keep questions closed — something that can only be answered yes or no. Not "what should I do about my job," but "should I stay in this job." Not "will I find love," but "is now the right time to open myself to it."

Hold the question in your mind, not just your mouth. Let the pendulum still itself before you ask. Then wait. Don't will it to move — that's the easiest way to get a false answer. Let it happen rather than make it happen.

When to stop

If you're asking the same question five different ways hoping for a different answer, that's not divination anymore — that's arguing with yourself. One clear question, one clear answer. Come back another day if you need more.

Caring for your pendulum

Cleanse it the same way you'd cleanse any crystal — running water, moonlight, or a few minutes of incense smoke — especially after asking something emotionally heavy. It's been holding your energy; let it rest too.

A pendulum doesn't predict your future. What it does is give you permission to trust what you already feel — a small, physical yes or no when your mind's too loud to hear it on its own.
